While there are still only a handful of titles available on the Nintendo DS, not all of them offer the amount of fun you'd like. However, with Zoo Keeper, players are getting a superb puzzle game that proves to provide not only some challenging modes, but some entertainment as well.
The problem with a lot of puzzle games is that they are either too difficult or too easy for everyone to enjoy. Zoo Keeper, though, strikes a great balance as it is accessible to master gamers, grandparents, and kids. This makes it a perfect fit for most, and the ability to make a puzzle game that is accessible to a wide audience is impressive.
Zoo Keeper, being a puzzle game, is part of a genre that hasn't been affected by the urbanization of video games. It doesn't mean that this game is lacking in good times, though. Beyond a standard puzzle mode, there is a time attack, Tokoton 100 (where you try to match titles of specific animals up to 100), and even multiplayer. So, like Kix, this is the type of game that both parents and kids can agree on, a rarity in this day and age.
The game is extremely cute, thanks to a lot of vibrant colors and the fact the game titles are animal faces. This may turn off some people looking for a cold, uninviting puzzle game like the original black and white Tetris. Look past the cute lions and pandas, and you'll be rewarded with a challenging puzzle game.
However, Zoo Keeper isn't a prefect game, and there are two flaws that really keep it from perfection. First, there is the atrocious sound that will drive both kids and parents crazy. Headphones or turning the sound down is the only way to really solve this problem. Then there is the price tag, which is currently at $40. Some might have a hard time justifying that price for a portable game.
Zoo Keeper for the Nintendo DS is a grade A puzzle game, and could keep someone entertained for hours upon end. It's extremely accessible, easy for both young and old to enjoy, and has a charming appearance. The only two reservations we have are with the sound and price. If you can look beyond that, you're getting a quality game with loads of replay value.
