Inferno matches and create-a-finisher highlight this year's WWE extravaganza.

While playing WWE SmackDown Vs. Raw 2009, THQ encouraged us to bludgeon wrestlers with steel chairs, throw them through tables and chuck them off ladders, simple stuff compared to one of the game's greatest feature, inferno matches. Surrounded by a ring of fire, the developers cheered us on as we dragged our weary opponents to the flames and plunged their exposed bodies into the fire. Sick? Perhaps. Awesome? Absolutely.

Wrestling in an inferno match is pretty intense. Flames cast an orange and imposing glow on the wrestlers, and a temperature gauge, located on the bottom left corner of the screen, rises the more moves you perform. Once it hits 500, the fire gets crazy and you have the option of burning your opponent. To do this, you drag him or her towards the fire and hit buttons in time, though your adversary can reverse the move. If you do manage to burn them, they fall out of the ring and roll around the apron, engulfed in flame. Extinguishers eventually put them out, and it's a funny and painful sequence.
Next up is the create-a-finisher, which lets you chain together up to 10 moves from a list of hundreds. It's possible, for example, to poke someone in the eyes, kick them in their groin, slap them in the face, DDT them into the mat and finish it with a pile driver.
Tag team matches are also a key feature. Wrestlers can perform team up attacks, distract and argue with the ref, break up pins and get illegal tags when no one is looking. In addition, there are tag team finishers, and the wrestler outside the ring can cause all sorts of havoc, such as pull down the bottom rope so an opposing wrestler "accidentally" flips outside of the ring.
Thus far, SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 is a great wrestling game that breathes new life into the franchise. THQ has done great work, and we can't wait to lace up our wrestling boots and hit the squared circle this fall.
