Interview with Rey Mysterio (XB360)

Mr. 619 talks video games, winning championships and Wrestlemania.

by Chris Buffa on Tuesday, November 20, 2007

To celebrate the release of THQ's WWE SmackDown Vs. Raw 2008 video game, wrestling superstar and former heavyweight champion Rey Mysterio appeared at Toys R Us in Times Square, NYC. A crowd of roughly 500 people lined up to snap pictures and take autographs, some even showing up wearing Rey's trademark masks. Before he braved the throngs of rabid fans, he talked to us about the Nintendo Wii, playing games with his son and his professional goal to one day reclaim the championship belt.

Are you a big video game player?
Not a very big video game player but I do play video games. I play a lot of Mario with my son. We just got the Nintendo Wii, and we love to play Wii Sports. We just get addicted to the bowling and golfing and baseball. SmackDown Vs Raw 2007 was one of our favorites, and now of course, it's going to be 2008.

Have you checked out Super Mario Galaxy?
My son has. He loves it.

What about the wrestlers? Who are the big gamers?
You'd be surprised. Kane, Steven Richards, Shelton Benjamin. We have competitions and Shelton always wins.

What's the game they play the most?
Madden is one of the top. For a while it was Tiger Woods. We were all getting together and linking on our PSPs, because we also do a lot of golfing when we're on the road. SmackDown Vs Raw is also one of the favorites.

It came out that Vince McMahon tried to ban video games in the locker room. Did it work?
I heard about that, but you know what, I think it's a pastime for us. Sometimes we're in a building almost seven hours a day, and after we get whatever we have to get done accomplished, we have a little spare time. We'll pull out our PSPs or we'll pull out a DVD. It's impossible to ban whatever it is.

How do you feel about how THQ captured your likeness and fighting style?
I think it's awesome, and the graphics, the popup with the pyro...the whole facial is so realistic. I was very impressed playing it and seeing how it felt like you were watching SmackDown.
