PlayStation Network

Although no games were released, PSN subscribers finally got a chance to check out Ninja Theory's breathtaking Heavenly Sword with a short but fun demo. Trailers for Haze, Resident Evil 5and various films also became available. RE5 definitely deserves a look: it's amazing.

Xbox Live Arcade

Along with a slew of Comic-Con related content (including various trailers and themes) and the Resident Evil trailer, Xbox Live fans received two new games last week.

Wing Commander Arena (Electronic Arts, 800 points) -- In some regards, Wing Commander Arena has much in common with Microsoft's Shadowrun game. It has its moments in pure, unadulterated multiplayer action, but doesn't really delve that deeply into the license in terms of content and back story. It does look and play pretty well, but fans may get bored with it sooner than expected. RATING: 6 (out of 10)

Super Contra (Konami, 400 points) -- Based upon the original arcade game (with the silly arcade cabinet art to prove it) and not the hit NES game, Super Contra may leave a bad taste in some gamers mouths. The action gets too chaotic for its own good and the reanimated explosions look hideous. Die-hard fans probably won't mind playing it though, especially online against a friend. RATING: 6 (out of 10)

Virtual Console

Drop Off (Hudson Soft, Turbo Grafx 16, 600 points) -- Hudson tries its hand at a Breakout redesign with this interesting paddle ball game, where players destroy falling panels and fight bosses with ball-bouncing action. Not bad, but it seems more like a curiosity purchase rather than a must-have game. RATING: 6 (out of 10)

Star Soldier (Hudson Soft, NES, 500 points) -- The shooter that started it all for Hudson's popular Japanese shooting series, Star Soldier definitely shows its age. However, shooter fans will probably look past the ancient graphics and sound and enjoy the likable gameplay. Just don't expect anything amazing. RATING: 6 (out of 10)

Dynamite Headdy (Sega, Sega Genesis, 800 points) -- The creators of Gunstar Heroes, Treasure, return once again with this quirky yet imaginative platformer. A heroic puppet uses his head (literally) to battle enemies, utilizing various abilities and fighting some of the most inexplicably weird bosses ever designed. Although it doesn't quite have the fun equivalent of Gunstar, Headdy still looks and plays wonderfully. RATING: 8 (out of 10)
