Wii Tops Five Million Sold in Japan (WII)

Driven by Wii Sports (not a pack-in in Japan) and Wii Play, Nintendo's console has surged past five million sold in the land of the rising sun.

The latest Japanese sales data from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain (via MCV) shows that Nintendo's Wii console has now passed the five million sold mark in its native Japan. More specifically, as of January 20 the estimated sales total comes in at 5,019,337 units. In the U.S. by comparison the Wii sold 6.29 million units through 2007 (according to NPD data).

Enterbrain's data also provided the top five selling Wii games (ranked by units):

Wii Sports - 2,663,938
Wii Play - 2,139,084
Mario Party 8 - 1,153,648
Wii Fit - 1,113,626
Super Mario Galaxy - 843,961

It's worth noting that in the U.S. during December Super Mario Galaxy sold 1.4 million copies and in November it sold 1.12 million. It's curious to see what many consider the "true successor" to Mario 64 being outsold by the likes of Wii Play and Mario Party 8.

Nintendo is expected to report its third quarter earnings this week. Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter also believes the company will once again raise its full-year guidance, which would mean annual revenues could surpass $14.5 billion.
