Warhawk provides the online experience PlayStation 3 owners need; an intense shooter with enormous maps, support for up to 32 players and tons of weapons. Not only is it a centerpiece for the hardware, thanks to gorgeous visuals and amazing draw distances, but it also consumes hours of your life. It has a great "just one more game" feeling, and has taking to the skies to decimate your enemies ASAP.
Available for download through the PlayStation Network ($39.99) or on Blu-ray ($59.99 and comes with a wireless Jabra headset), Warhawk offers a Battlefield-esque experience in which teams (or every man for himself) attempt to dominate one of five maps. To do this, you have a plethora of options at your disposal. You can take the fight to the ground, annihilating enemies with anti-aircraft guns, ferrying comrades in a jeep, picking off fools with a sniper rifle or blowing things to hell in a tank. In addition, you can jump into the cockpit of a Warhawk, a bad ass plane capable of turning other vehicles into flaming piles of crap.
Like in Battlefield, almost everyone bolts for the aircraft, but Sony does a nice job of making the Warhawk's readily available. The ground war is important, as players pull their weight manning those powerful anti-aircraft guns and sneaking around, but it's best to submit to peer pressure and fly almost every time you play, not only because everyone's doing it, but also because it's friggin' cool. Everything in the game controls amazingly well, but tilting the right analog stick to put the Warhawk into evasive action and then recovering to send your enemies to hell eclipses everything else the game has to offer. Just avoid the SIXAXIS motion controls. While it's cool guiding the Warhawk by physically moving the controller, it comes with a steep learning curve, which ultimately leaves you vulnerable to skilled pilots.
Piloting the Warhawk is a lot of fun, though the ground war has its moments. Thanks to incredible draw distances, you can snipe people from across the map, and since most gamers focus on the aerial combat, you'll be able to sneak around much easier and snag more kills, particularly at enemy bases. Just don't limit yourself to the sniper rifle. Mow people down with the automatic rifle, torch them with the flamethrower and blow them up with the rocket launcher.
