A little while ago I played EA's latest Tiger Woods mobile game and I thought it was ok, at least for the time. However, Gameloft's Vijay Singh Pro Golf 2005 pretty much whoops its ass in almost every respect (note the word "almost"). It plays better, sounds better, and damn, it looks absolutely amazing. It's really one of the best golf games available for the platform even though it comes up short in terms of options.

If you're one of those hombres (or senoritas) who thinks that variety is the spice of life, then Vijay Singh's going to seriously disappoint you, in large part because it features Vijay and a whole lot more of Vijay. There are other golfers that you can unlock, but he's the only professional to select from at the beginning, unlike EA's Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006, which features several well known personalities that can be downloaded on the fly.

Unfortunately, the same goes for courses. Tiger Woods features quite a few well-known courses from around the world while Vijay only has two, or so it seems. But I'll be a stale tortilla shell if they aren't the most glorious looking 3D environments ever seen on a mobile phone. Once again, Gameloft proves why it's one of the few developers that actually knows what to do with sophisticated hardware, as this game is absolutely incredible looking. The character models and the courses are both early PSOne quality and the frame rate never wavers. Granted, all you're doing is smashing a tiny ball around a sea of green, but it looks so fantastic that it begs to be seen, and if you play the game around friends or near other people in general, chances are good that they'll peer over your shoulder.

Eye candy aside, Vijay plays well too. Basically you've got two meters, Power and Aim, and all you need to do is press Home/OK to determine each. It's all fairly easy to learn and the rewards for performing well, glorious scenes of the ball cutting through the air and landing on the green...or a sand trap, are well worth the effort.

Like in most sports games, you have the option of hopping into a quick game, or you can learn the basics in the Tutorial, customize a game in Free Hole, or if you really want to get the most from your money, test your skills in the Career mode. Here, you create your own golfer from scratch, editing their Gender, Face, Skin, and Hair, then you hit the links and golf your heart out in an attempt to raise your stats. It's not particularly sophisticated, but it is involving to a degree and it'll certainly keep you busy if you're looking to waste some time.

The really big question here is, which one should you choose, Tiger or Vijay? They're both enjoyable titles, but I would go with Vijay simply because it has just enough content to satisfy you and it's a visual showpiece for your high powered phone (providing you have a high powered phone...or even own a phone).
