Despite the bothersome control issue, I'm still quite fond of the game, mostly because it looks and sounds outstanding. The developers really nailed the presentation, from the hauntingly-delicious and creepy visuals to the nostalgic soundtrack. The production values are way over the top and I'm smitten by the fabulous use of color, animation, and gore. Compared to other PSP titles, Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins is the total package.

I also dig the gameplay, even though it makes me want to toss the disc into the microwave. Capcom's added new weapons such as the Scatter Crossbow and the Vine Whip as well as items like the Warp Staff and 100 Yr. Snakeskin. There's just a lot more to work with and that gives the game some variety. The action's also nonstop, whether I'm battling ghosts or trapped in one of the game's phenomenal boss fights. It's great stuff.

Praise notwithstanding, I feel like Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins is missing some special quality that would make it just as addictive and magical as its prequels. I like the game, but I don't love it. It's good, no question, but I'm not sure if I'll ever play it again, even for nostalgia's sake. However, it's still worth renting, especially if you're a fan of the series or have an unquenchable thirst for punishment. Just make sure you have a stress ball handy.
