In the midst of World War II, the Third Reich's paranormal division was working overtime in trying to find the key to winning. On a trip to Tibet, their chief paranormal scientist found a means to bring the dead back to life. Eventually he was able to build a life-giving machine that would give soldiers of the Reich an opportunity to further serve in their ubersoldier program. Apparently, the resurrection process bestows great powers on these soldiers. The only drawback is that the process removes any sense of loyalty that they might have had in their previous life. However, their scientists may have come up with a solution to that problem.

You play as Karl Stolz, a soldier for the Third Reich, recently killed in combat and brought back to life. In addition to being an ubersoldier, you've been injected with a serum that inhibits your will so that you'll follow the orders of the first person who talks to you. As you awaken to your newly resurrected life, the resistance comes busting into the hospital and automatically adopt you, no questions asked.

As far as games go, they don't come any more straightforward than Ubersoldier. If you are looking for a typical shooter, this is it. The one thing that makes this game stand out is the absolutely horrendous voice acting. It's bad enough that the voices don't synchronize to the lips of the characters, but the acting is so bland and flat that it's almost painful to endure. Even the standard soldier chatter includes inane lines like, "I see Nazis..." from your NPC teammates. The "Nazis" you fight yell at you with clearly American accents, and things never get any better.

Your character is allowed to carry up to four weapons, which are limited to pistols, rifles, machine guns, and heavy weapons in addition to grenades. While the game sports nineteen weapons, none of them stand out as anything special. Those who are looking for some retro-futuristic weapons like some of the ones found in Return to Castle Wolfenstein will be sorely disappointed.

The only benefit you get from the resurrection process is a Time Shield that will stop bullets in mid-air. In addition, you get special points for pulling off certain feats. Kill three enemies in a row using your knife within a time limit and you'll get some extra health points. Get three head shots in a row, and you'll recover extra energy towards your shield. This pretty much sums up all that makes you uber. You're certainly not invincible (despite being undead), and no stronger or faster than any of the foes you encounter. In fact, Karl jumps like a pansy, unable to climb onto small crates or negotiate over debris.
