Few games can truly claim development drama like Too Human can. Indeed, the game's status is secure among vaporware and former vaporware greats like Duke Nukem Forever and Daikatana. It all started back when Too Human had a famously bad E3 2006 and escalated with the subsequent lawsuit between Silicon Knights and middleware provider Epic Games and was consistently fueled by Denis Dyack's outspoken remarks on numerous subjects.
While the enthusiast press made a great deal of hay over the above soap opera, at the end of the day, such things don't pay Silicon Knights' bills. As such, many members of the industry waited breathlessly for the August 2008 sales results to see just how well the game had fared. Was its performance phenomenal, terrible or just 'good enough?' We examine the results for Too Human and try and see what its present means for its future.
Thousands of players get millions of drops
According to the NPD, Too Human was the eighth best selling title for the month of August in a month dominated by Madden. It was the third best selling Xbox 360 title for the month, coming in behind Madden 09 and Soul Calibur IV. Overall, Too Human sold roughly 168,200 copies during the August period.
It can be debated whether the drama surrounding the game was ultimately positive or negative for Too Human in the long run; it's said that no publicity is bad publicity. Whether it was curiosity or pure infamy, over 900,000 gamers downloaded the Too Human demo in the first week, setting a new record. It's worth noting that this record was surpassed by Star Wars: The Force Unleashed not soon afterwards and that game has seen sales of 1.5 million across all platforms, dwarfing Too Human's early returns.
