Now you know why your co-workers started calling in "sick" last week -- The Sims 3 has sold over 1.4 million copies in its first week of release, making it one of the biggest PC game launches of all time (behind World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade / Lich King and Championship Manager 4) and the biggest PC game launch for the game's publisher, Electronic Arts.

The Sims series is no stranger to success -- predecessors The Sims and The Sims 2 are the top two bestselling PC games of all time (they sold 16 million and 13 million copies, respectively). Even prior to the Sims 3's launch it became one of the most pirated game downloads on file-sharing services. The mobile version of Sims 3 for the iPhone also ranked as the Top Paid App in less than a day after its launch.

The Sims 3 updates the franchise with more lifelike features and personalities, expanding the range of careers and aspirations of the characters but keeping that addicting gameplay the series is known for. We scored the game a 9/10, but we certainly weren't the only ones to give it a glowing review.
