It seems like only yesterday that we were playing Tekken on the original PlayStation, beating each other up with goofy-looking characters while mastering ten-hit combos. Well, times have changed for the better. Tekken 6 is due to hit stores in a couple of weeks on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and it's a monumental leap forward for the series.

First, the game has a huge roster, with 40 brawlers to choose from. Several favorites return, including the powerful Heihachi, the versatile masked wrestler, King (and his nemesis, Armor King) and a few oddballs, including the boxing mini T-Rex, Alex, and the wood dummy, Mokujin. In addition, six new characters join the fray, including Russian military bombshell Alisa Bosconovich and karate master Lars Alexandersson. To help personify the fighting experience, Namco also lets you customize these characters. You can change their appearance with tattoos, hairstyles and various fashion accessories. (We always wondered what Armor King would look like in a pimp hat.)

Characters aren't the only things that Namco changed with Tekken 6. The environments were redesigned from the ground up, and are partially destructible. That means you can throw an enemy through walls, fall from a high-rise building and avoid an incoming helicopter that crash lands in the middle of a fistfight.

Although the game comes with offline versus, we suggest taking on challengers from across the globe. Tekken 6 features online play for both Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, so you can seek players of equal or better skill. Furthermore, ranked leaderboards will keep track of your progress, so you might want to brush up on your techniques.

Tekken 6 will also feature a number of returning modes, including Survival (where you face an onslaught of characters until your energy runs out) and Arcade (where you hop into quick matches against computer or human opponents). One great new mode you'll want to check out, though, is Scenario Campaign. Similar to the Tekken Force mode in Tekken 3, Scenario gives you the option of using any of the game's characters in free-flow combat against different enemies; you can use your entire move set against them. You'll also gain access to a number of helpful power-ups, including guns, bo staffs and giant robots. Furthermore, Scenario Campaign is online compatible, enabling you to fight alongside a friend.

As for the gameplay, multiple hit moves, strong grapples and an array of combos and special attacks are available and very easy to learn; a Practice mode helps you get the hang of things if you're a little rusty.

If you prefer the full-blown fighting experience, Namco Bandai will offer a bundle that includes the game and wireless Mad Catz fighting controller. This package sells for $150, but it looks like a killer deal, especially if you need to replace your corded Street Fighter Tournament FightStick.

The next King of the Iron Fist kicks off October 27th, and we'll post our review in the near future. But from what we've seen, Tekken 6 looks like a wonderful addition to the hard-hitting franchise.
