Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World Review (WII)

Some tales are better left untold.

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World revisits many of the places and characters from the delightful 2004 GameCube role-playing game, but fails to capture its charm. Weaving together a predictable and notably short (for RPG standards) story, with graphics that have improved very little in the past four years, it's hard to not be immediately disappointed. The combat is still real time and combo-heavy, but lacks the depth and strategy of any modern game. The world map feels similarly gimped, with little room for exploration. Tacking on support for four players in battle does help a great deal, preventing monotony from setting in. However, sloppy combat and an over reliance on cut scenes ruins the game. RPG-starved Wii fans might have a good time, but they're probably better served by revisiting the superior GameCube prequel.
