Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow Review (PSP)

One of the best PSP games to date.

Sony graced its PSP with Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror a year and a half ago, and now Logan's Shadow arrives on store shelves to offer a second, and dare we say better, third-person shooting experience.

Taking its cues from the likes of Metal Gear Solid and Gears of War, Logan's Shadow builds upon the strengths of its predecessors. The stealth action game play is slower paced than a typical shooter, due to the tactical approach necessary to complete missions while trying to stay alive. However, Logan is almost always kept in the midst of tense shootouts with enemies coming from any number of directions. Firing from behind cover remains a key part of the game, and the addition of blind firing offers a new method of strategy, as Logan can force enemies to take cover so he can advance.

Logan has quite the arsenal of weapons, armor and visors at his disposal. There are plenty of both short and long-range firearms, as well as the typical assortment of grenades. Players will have the most fun with the sniper rifle, which not only fires bullets, but also explosives and electric shock darts. There are also basic and advanced melee combat moves that can be pulled off for silent but deadly kills.

Other areas of the game will have Logan in beautifully rendered water, both on its surface and underneath, which requires its own unique skill set, especially as shooting underwater enemies mandate leading the foe in order to account for slower travel speed.
