A leaked sales report from Japan-based gaming magazine Famitsu (by way of Joystiq and Cubed3) says that Super Smash Bros. Brawl sold 500,000 copies during the game's first day of sales.

Since then, gamers have reported that there's a shortage of available copies in the island nation. Kyle Orland (who also pens GameDaily BIZ's Media Coverage column) adds a little doubt to the accuracy of the report because Super Mario Galaxy, a game that featured Nintendo's most famous icon, sold only 250,000 during its first week. Given that Super Smash Bros. Brawl is also highly anticipated in the U.S. on March 9, stateside sales could more easily top the 500,000 sales mark on that date.
