Capcom today released the results of their fiscal year ending March 31, 2009. Sales for the publisher were up 91.1 billion yen, over 10 percent year-on-year. Profits were slightly up, a little over three percent, to 8.06 billion yen.
The Japanese company noted that one of its last titles to release during the fiscal year, Resident Evil 5, was one of their biggest hits with over four million copies shipped worldwide. Capcom notes that shipments of that game along with Street Fighter IV (two million worldwide) help accelerate oversees market growth. The Monster Hunter Freedom series in Japan also helped Capcom achieve some of its best returns in recent months.
The main strength for Capcom was definitely its home console division, netting 62.9 billion yen in sales, up over 20 percent from the previous year, with profits increased over 40 percent to 16.4 billion yen. The abovementioned series contributed greatly to the company's bottom line, along with Mega Man Star Force 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV, which Capcom distributed in Japan.
Capcom's arcade division did benefit from the release of Street Fighter IV in Japan. However, the market was called "sluggish" and the arcade operations division saw profits fall over 70 percent to 224 million yen.
For the next fiscal year ending March 31, 2010, Capcom is expecting both sales and operating income to increase to 95 billion yen and 15.5 billion yen, respectively. The home video game segment is expected to the lead the way for the company again.
