Recap: Capcom Gamer's Day 2006 (PS2)

Fresh from Vegas with plenty of Capcom titles on our minds, we recap the grand event.

Hey, all. Well, I survived a day in Vegas and two disastrous flights to and from (hint: sub-zero weather does not a friendly flight like) to give you the ultimate report on Capcom Gamer's Day 2006, being held this year at the spacious and luxurious Venetian hotel right there on the Las Vegas Strip. Needless to say, the company's got a big powerhouse line-up just rarin' to go for '06, leading into their strong showing they'll have coming up at E3.

The company kicked off the event with a media presentation in one of the meeting rooms, where they began drawing out their plans for the next gaming year that lie ahead. They made a couple of announcements for the Sony PSP, a platform they'll be supporting heavily with releases over the next year. Along with their previously announced games, the company will bring the following games to the US...

Capcom Puzzle World- A dedicated gathering of puzzle games from the Capcom front, including the popular Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, the Arkanoid-like paddle game Block Block, and all three of their Buster Bros. games, where two brothers must shoot out bothersome bubbles before time runs out. All of these games will be Wi-Fi compatible, so you can play against friends. This one should arrive in fall '06.

Power Stone Collection- The Power Stone games were a big hit on the Dreamcast years ago, and Capcom wants to celebrate that by releasing the two games in a collection. All the fierce and ridiculous fighting action will be thrown in, and Wi-Fi support will allow multiple players to jump in and kick a whole lot of ass. This one arrives later this year.

Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins- Finally, we received confirmation that Ghouls n' Ghosts Extreme would be arriving in the US under this new moniker. The game features new weapons, more advanced weapon layout, and a hybrid 2-D/3-D presentation that brings the game into a whole new light. This one's slated for Q3 2006.

The company then showcased a number of games for the PSP and PlayStation 2, including Okami (which, unfortunately, is now delayed to summer 2006) and Street Fighter Alpha Anniversary. They also went into some slight details about Street Fighter II for the Xbox Live download service, complete with online play and "quarter mode", where you can reserve a spot to get to fighting.

But then one of the game directors stepped up to talk about the forthcoming Xbox 360 games. Some play time went into Deadrising, where you control a character fighting an armada of zombies as he saves people and tries to make way for a helicopter to rescue them. We'll have a full hands-on report on this game very soon

Following that, they showed a demonstration of Lost Planet, a futuristic science fiction adventure where you basically fight it out against evil aliens (known as the "Green Eyes") and enemy soldiers, using both on-foot tactics and a number of mechs known as the VS'es. The game looks to have some serious potential, and Capcom is trying to work on getting as many players online with it as they can, stating around sixteen to thirty-two. The game is slated to arrive in early 2007 in the US, and we'll have a full preview of it shortly.

The Lost Planet presentation also featured a couple of nice quirks, including some cute girls in Eskimo outfits, the giveaway of some nice rain parkas, and the setting-off of these cold canisters that basically put a chill over the room...which was the point.

Following the presentation and a nice lunch, Capcom opened up their game demo room, where they had various titles on display for the PlayStation 2, PSP, and mobile phones. They also had several Deadrising kiosks on hand, so journalists could get their hands-on time with the much-anticipated Xbox 360 game.
