Star Wars: The Force Unleashed sells 1 million copies its first week, despite mixed reviews and a decidedly average score of '72' on Metacritic (user scores were a bit higher, scoring the game a 79/100).

The VGChartz report says that most the copies were sold for the Xbox 360 platform and then after that was evenly distributed among the other systems.

To put this into perspective, Halo 3 sold 4.2 million copies its first week and Grand Theft Auto IV sold 6 million during its launch week. So for a Star Wars game to sell 1/4 of what Halo did its first week, it's hard to call TFU a runaway hit. Then again, it goes to show that reviewers may have been too harsh on the game, or maybe the Star Wars brand is still strong with the Force (or, at least, the general gaming population).

Note: VG Chartz's finding methods have been a subject of much controversy. While all sampling data is subject to error, we'll see how VGC's number stands up when the 'official' numbers hit next month.
