Star Wars hits Sony's PSP for the second round in the form of Ubisoft's third person blast fest, Star Wars Lethal Alliance. Taking place between Episodes III and IV, the game chronicles the Empire's rise to power as well as the whereabouts of some key characters. Overall, it provides enough action to satiate Star Wars fanatics, even though it brings nothing exciting to its genre.
In Lethal Alliance, you play as Twi'lek Rianna Saren, a former slave with a thirst for revenge against her former Imperial Master, Zarien Kheev. During the course of her adventure, she picks up a sidekick, a droid named Zeeo (also known as Z-58-0) and accepts a mission from Princess Leia to figure out what secret project the Empire has been working on (in this case, the Death Star). With fortune as well as an opportunity to assassinate Kheev on her mind, Rianna speeds off to not only make a little scratch from the Rebellion, but also satisfy her vengeful desire.
On the positive side, the game introduces you to brand new Star Wars characters (Rianna and Zeeo), provides some much-needed filler for the space between Episodes III and IV, and takes place in a wide variety of locales. You'll visit the deserts of Tatooine, wander amidst the volcanic scenery of Mustafar and explore the first Death Star. Plenty of familiar faces pop up as well, such as mercenary Kyle Katarn, IG-88 style assassin droids, Rancor monsters, plenty of Stormtroopers and the aforementioned Princess Leia.
Ubisoft also did a good job mixing up the types of play. While most of the game plays in the third person, the first person perspective comes into play when operating gun turrets or taking control of Zeeo to go places Rianna cannot fit. This variety keeps the game somewhat fresh. Furthermore, both Rianna and Zeeo can work as a team. By pressing triangle, Zeeo lurches forward and temporarily stuns enemies, allowing you to run up and slice them using Rianna's energy blade, the Thorn of Ryloth.
As the game progresses, you'll also use Zeeo as a shield (it deflects blaster fire back at your enemies), as a vehicle (on rails segments see you dodging all sorts of obstructions) and to reach high ledges (Zeeo attaches itself to marked nodes and Rianna can use the droid to climb).
