Creation/evolution game Spore has generated a database of over 80 million creatures, buildings and vehicles in the Sporepedia since its release last fall, and now that developer Maxis has opened up the API (application programming interface), they're inviting developers to create the ultimate Spore application or widget. Creating an app based on a creation game? Talk about meta. Not only that, but they're giving away an NVIDIA graphics card as a grand prize for the best one.

The API gives developers access to statistics, creature information and more from the Sporepedia database; Maxis has posted a few examples of already created widgets, ranging from screensavers to mini tournament games to creature aquariums.
