Electronic Arts has acknowledged that it's looking to license the television and movie rights to its highly anticipated Spore. The game's creator, Will Wright, who's responsible for the hugely popular The Sims franchise (over 100 million units sold), told Reuters that EA wants to leverage Spore in many ways that the company failed to do with The Sims.

"With Spore, we're looking way outside the game space, such as TV, movies, etc. We're basically planting the seeds to spread Spore out to a much wider group of people than would ever play a computer game," Wright commented.

He continued, "We're going to be much more intelligent about harvesting other market opportunities for Spore than we were with The Sims, which as big as it was in the game space, pretty much remains in the game space."

As incredible as the success of The Sims has been, Wright thinks Spore could do even better. "Longer term, I think the brand of Spore potentially has a wider net to cast than The Sims did," he said.

If that prediction turns out to be true, then perhaps EA chief executive John Riccitiello will get his wish for an entire new EA label devoted to Spore.

It's worth noting that EA is looking to bring more of its properties in general to Hollywood. In July the publisher announced a partnership with UTA to "significantly ramp up" its film and television slate.
