Spider-Man 3 Review (WII)

Spidey saves his worst adventure for the Wii.

by Robert Workman on Wednesday, May 09, 2007

After two average efforts for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Spider-Man 3 makes a stop on the Nintendo Wii. The system's motion sensitive controllers should've allowed the developers to mimic Spidey's moves, but the game sucks worse than the other versions.

One of the biggest dilemmas revolves around the game's control set-up. Swinging has its moments of fun until the player comes to a stop by slamming into a wall. Combat feels even worse, with blind remote and Nunchuk movements replacing actual technique. It becomes an even bigger setback as the game progresses, with Spidey facing the same thugs repeatedly, as the Wii version lacks mission variety. Lastly, the inoperable camera system turns out to be one long, terrible joke. Players hold down a button, move the Nunchuk around and watch it slowly pan around to get the right view. Meanwhile, Spider-Man gets attacked and dies.

Spider-Man 3's presentation doesn't get anything right either. The scope of New York City does present a huge area to play in, but it looks downright hideous. Textures frequently pop in and out, especially when Spidey reaches high altitudes. At one point, half a bridge simply vanished. The questionable frame rate and average character models don't make the game's performance any better. As for the audio, several of the movie's actors reprise their roles, including Tobey Maguire and Thomas Haden Church, but stupid thugs that repeat the same lines drown them out.

Poor Spider-Man. He should've received a better debut on the Wii, rather than one with a below-average presentation, underutilized controls and general lack of interest. A super-villain would be easy to blame, but it really comes down to poor development.
