In one of the worst gaming tragedies to hit a console, the PlayStation 2 Spider-Man 3 fails to capture the movie's excitement, stumbling along and throwing numerous glitches in players' paths. They all combine to form one of the worst movie-based games.
For the apparent sake of "realism," unless Spidey is hugging the side of a building, as well as facing more or less in that direction, he will not even attempt to shoot a web. Players watch with ever increasing anger as he tumbles to the ground, or more annoyingly, slams into the side of building after building because there are no good spots for his web to latch onto. In fact, unless the player's aim is to glide down a straightaway, control problems continue to pop up. Rounding corners with any sort of precision, at least without "leveling up" Spider-Man's abilities by collecting tokens, is nigh impossible. In addition, the sluggish camera makes navigation even worse, as gamers struggle to get a decent view.
The game really drags its feet getting into the movie's storyline, boring players with generic crime cleanup missions that do not pertain to the film's plot. The sandbox style of randomly pursuing missions spread throughout the city fails to provide adequate motivation to want to wade through the drudge to get to the few relatively exciting moments. The whole game feels decidedly disjointed.
