Soul Calibur Legends Preview
June 28, 2007 | By: Robert Workman
Control-wise, players will find a fun system to deal with. Wielding both the Nunchuk and the Wii remote, they should have no trouble moving around and initiating varied attacks. Siegfried and a partner of the gamer's choice can "swap out" at any time with the push of a button, conserving the unused partner's energy. Each of the characters has their own distinct combat style, comfortably put into play with the player's motions. Siegfried's sword swipes can cut an enemy down to size in a matter of seconds. Mitsurugi's swift attacks make him useful against a group of foes. Ivy not only has looks that kill, but her swinging chain swords can chop down any surrounding enemies. Their skills can be upgraded over the course of the quest as well, courtesy of additional items and equipment. No word yet on which extra playable characters will emerge in Legends, but Namco Bandai should have a few more surprises to spring on its fans...and may reveal them in a couple of weeks at E3... Voldo, perhaps.
Last but not least, Namco provided a brief glimpse into Legends' multiplayer mode. The screen splits in two, letting two players collaborate against enemies. Although the rep didn't run through this part of the game long, it looks like it should extend the replay value. Other modes can be unlocked as well, although Namco hasn't revealed them. Expect the usual list, such as a Survival Mode, a gallery and more.
Even though Wii owners won't receive a version of
Soul Calibur IV, Legends should definitely pick up the slack. This third-person action adventure game may not look like a trailblazing masterstroke, but after a few minutes with it, players should find that its soul still burns as brightly as the other Soul Calibur games. Look for more information soon, including a more detailed hands-on report plus the eventual review in November.
