Sonic Rush Adventure sticks to the basics -- good old-fashioned 2-D gameplay with minor bits of innovation. The result is a quality platform game that you should pick up ASAP.

Adventure follows the events of the original Rush. Sonic and Tails get whisked away to a tropical paradise where everything looks calm and peaceful but ends up being anything but. A young pirating tyke named Marine explains that a nasty pirate by the name of Captain Whisker has been causing trouble while seeking out an ancient artifact. Also seeking out the artifact is Blaze the Cat, the heroine introduced in the first Rush. Together, the team must stop Whisker before the islands fall under his control. It's not the greatest story, due to the fact that the new characters introduced don't have nearly as much allure as previous ones. (Marine in particular becomes annoying rather quickly.) Players should just go ahead and skip right to the action.

The game plays like the older Sonic games, on a strictly 2-D level but with some 3-D touches. Run from point A to point B, and along the way, acquire power-ups and rings, which, when a certain amount get collected, earn precious one-ups and continues. You can also track down Chaos and Sol Emeralds over the course of the game, which unlock the best ending. All of this reminds us why we love Sonic games in the first place, and it's nice to see that Sonic Team (with the help of Dimps) remembers as well. This game just feels like an old-school Sonic game throughout, whether playing as either the hedgehog or Blaze.
