Silent Hill Origins Preview (PSP)

Konami brings its twisted franchise to PSP.

PSP critics bash the machine for not having enough original content, but don't tell that to Konami. The famous publisher delivered three exclusive Metal Gear video games, and this summer it'll terrorize audiences with Silent Hill Origins. The latest entry in the company's popular horror franchise, Origins takes place before the 1999 original, filling in some holes as well as introducing new characters, all the while scaring the hell out of anyone that dares to solve its mysteries.

This time around, truck driver Travis O'Grady falls victim to the eerie town's magnetic pull, driving through its impenetrable fog and uncovering numerous horrors. After coming upon a raging house fire, he leaves his vehicle and rescues a badly burned girl. While in the town's hospital, and being blown off by the only doctor, O'Grady soon discovers that the town has serious issues, and before long, runs into all sorts of monsters, the infamous (and faceless) nurses being the least of his problems.

Origins displays the action through a third person perspective, and developer Climax elected to go with a fixed camera. Much like previous games, it seems to move at a deliberately slow pace, to better heighten the tension by assaulting players with all sorts of strange noises. Travis uses various weapons to dispatch enemies, and appears to have better proficiency with firearms than other characters, most notably Harry Mason, the troubled father in the original game. With that being said, all of the weapons break after extended use, forcing players to use them sparingly or risk being unarmed.
