Shrek and his friends are back, and even though it's been roughly a year and half since we've seen them in their latest big-screen adventure, the video game license continues to roll on. This time around, Shrek and company are involved in a super-brawl of sorts in Shrek SuperSlam, which pits many of the characters, good and bad, against each other in a free-flowing fighting environments. Think of it as Super Smash Bros. Melee, but with the Shrek flavor.

The game features controls that should fit right in with Melee fans, as you have different attacks and the ability to pick up and throw things, like your opponent or a number of objects in each environment. The graphics look pretty good, with detailed backdrops taken straight from the movie or inspired on the side by another fairy tale. One level, for instance, takes place on the leaves of the beanstalk from the Jack and the Beanstalk story.

The variety of fighters is good, as you can take control of anyone from Shrek himself to the Gingerbread Man (who surprisingly holds his own) the evil Prince Charming. The problem lies within the controls, which aren't really as sharp as they need to be. Sometimes you'll want to line up for an attack and instead find yourself wide open to take some damage. Furthermore, the voices, while trying to copy those from the movie, get annoying rather quickly.

However, Shrek SuperSlam still remains a bit of fun, and those who don't mind some multiplayer action will certainly find it here. It's better than most Shrek games before it, and it faithfully represents the films as it's supposed to. SuperSlam is no ogre-achiever, but it works.
