While 2K Sports may be liked by many hardcore gamers for the quality of the label's titles, EA Sports essentially has a monopoly on the sports video game sector, with numerous exclusive licenses. That won't stop Ubisoft from trying to enter the competitive space, however.
GameDaily BIZ asked Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot in a new interview if its upcoming Shaun White Snowboarding (shipping this holiday season) should perhaps be viewed as a pre-cursor to the publisher making a larger sports push. While Guillemot wouldn't go so far as to say that they're taking on EA Sports, he did make it clear that the publisher has more interest in the sports market.
"...that's the goal – we want to enter this extreme sports business," he responded when asked about Shaun White. As for expanding beyond that and into other sports, he said, "We want to first get in there and get a name, then we'll see [about other sports]."
Ubisoft has tried to compete in sports before with the And 1 basketball games, which didn't fare too well. Guillemot is well aware of that fact and he's making sure quality is where it needs to be in the company's future sports games. "And 1... was in a competitive sector and it wasn't done in-house. When you want to attack that kind of segment you really have to work hard within your company," he said.
