Section 8 is a large-scale first person shooter from Gamecock and TimeGate Studios. You'll wage war across multiple planets, completing objectives to gain the upper hand and blasting your opponents with a series of high tech weapons. Except the game contains some unique features that set it apart from its competition, the most noteworthy being its enjoyable re-spawn mini game.

Pshh... he doesn't look so tough!

At a glance, Section 8 resembles most first person shooters in that you select from two factions, Section 8, the 8th Armored Infantry (aka, the good guys) or The Arm of Orion, a collection of evildoers hell bent on running amok. From there, you battle across multiple and varied maps, engaging the enemy in wild shootouts, commandeering vehicles such as tanks and completing various tasks to give your side the edge.

With that said, TimeGate is committed to reinventing the online shooter experience, and it starts with dying. Dying in first person shooters means having to wait up to 15 seconds until you re-spawn, but that's not the case in Section 8. Instead of sitting in a lobby watching the action unfold, you burn into the map, dropping 15,000 feet wherever you please, be it a safe area or on top of an enemy tank. This allows for some strategizing, as you and your squad mates communicate your drop zones, possibly to catch the enemy unawares. In fact, you can even manipulate where you land while in mid-air, hitting your suit's brakes for a smooth landing. Of course, if you prefer to go in hard, you can smash into the ground and leave a crater in your wake.

Furthermore, you're free to customize your suit and call on your faction's orbital fleet to provide assistance, though at this point, TimeGate hasn't gone into detail on the types of help it provides.

At this point, it's much too early to get a good feel for Section 8, especially since it debuts late in 2009. But what we saw looks solid, and we can't wait to make those crazy drops. It's always nice to fall 15,000 feet without splattering across the pavement.
