And the arcade classics just keep piling on. Konami's been a pretty good supporter for the Xbox Live Arcade service for the Xbox 360, providing two games that not only harken back to a simpler, kinder day of arcade action, but also includes some improvements to make the games feel a bit more modern. Frogger and Time Pilot have garnered many a gamer since their release, both in their original arcade form and in some revamped form to give the games a brighter sheen. They haven't scored gangbuster numbers as far as critics are concerned, but they're a lot of fun.
The run continues with Scramble, although it's probably not the ideal choice. In the game, you take control of a ship that has to blast its way through a series of zones. As you proceed through these zones, you have to maintain a fuel level by blowing up fuel tanks on the ground, while also taking on ground-based and aerial enemies. Each wave gets tougher than the next, so you're probably not in for an easy flight. Heck, it took me a few tries just to get through to the third level.
The game's difficulty is moderately easy, though. Once you figure out the patterns of these enemies and the locations of these tanks, you'll be in for some smooth sailing. But that's also the thing that holds Scramble back from the greatness that Frogger and Time Pilot have achieved- it never really changes. You fly through a zone, going from left to right, and keep on flying. Sure, you can mix up your ratio of gunfire and bombs, but you really don't do much else. Once you beat the game's levels, all it does is offer them over again. There are no new unlockable challenges.
The graphics look alright for a typical space shooter, although there are very few differences this time around between the regular and upgraded versions. The sound is minimal at best, with little blasting sounds, the occasional enemy sound, and a brief opening tune that tries to march you forward. That's about it. I tried to crank my customized soundtrack to the proceedings but found very little to get excited about.
The Xbox Live supported co-op doesn't really do much for the longevity either, although the Achievements you can earn are pretty spread out, and the last two or three are pretty hard to get. But that's about it. For 400 points, Scramble is a serviceable shooter that arcade fans should moderately enjoy. But if all you have are a certain amount of points to spend in the XBLA field, I suggest going with Time Pilot first. This game's fuel seems to run out quicker than it lets on.
