To borrow a quote from another music game, apparently you don't need instruments to rock. Rock Band: Unplugged comes to Sony's PlayStation Portable on June 9th without the standard plastic drumset, lead/bass guitars and microphone of previous Rock Band games.

Instead, as shown in a new trailer, it looks like players will use the PSP's left, top, triangle and circle buttons to play notes on the four instrument tracks. The interface, complete with performance meters, multipliers and overdrive, will be familiar to fans of Rock Band's console games.

Harmonix has announced three game modes for Rock Band: Unplugged, including World Tour, which appears to mirror the globe-trotting, venue-unlocking features of Rock Band games past. In addition, the developer confirmed character customization, Band Survival, and Warm Up -- details about the latter two modes are forthcoming.

Over 40 songs will be included with the game; nine of the tracks will make their Rock Band debut on the PSP, but will be released as downloadable content for other systems at a further date. Those tracks are as follows:

3 Doors Down- "Kryptonite"
AFI- "Miss Murder"
Alice in Chains- "Would?"
Audioslave- "Gasoline"
Black Tide- "Show Me the Way"
Blink 182- "What's My Age Again"
Freezepop- "Less Talk More Rokk"
Jackson 5- "ABC"
Tenacious D- "Rock Your Socks"

New songs will be available for Rock Band: Unplugged through an in-game store, a first on the PSP. Sony will also be commemorating the release of the game with a $199.99 branded PSP Entertainment Pack, which includes the game, a black PSP, a 4 GB memory card and a movie voucher to download the Jack Black comedy "School of Rock."

Activision previously brought its competing music-rhythm franchise, Guitar Hero, to the Nintendo DS with Guitar Hero: On Tour and sequel, On Tour: Decades. Both of these games required a four-button 'Guitar Grip' peripheral plugged into the DS's Game Boy Advance slot.

Rock Band: Unplugged will be available for the PSP on June 9 for $39.99. Stay tuned for hands-on previews, screens and more!
