Despite the tremendous amount of weekly downloadable content (including upcoming packs from Nirvana and The Who), it was only a matter of time before a sequel to the incredibly popular Rock Band was announced. The music simulator captivated audiences across various consoles (most recently on the Nintendo Wii), and now the forthcoming Rock Band 2 is set to debut on multiple platforms this September.

Up to four players can take part in band performances, taking the position of singer, lead guitarist, rhythm/bass guitarist or drummer. Each spot has an accompanying peripheral, such as a microphone, a Stratocaster-modeled guitar and a four-pad drum set. If you're on your own, you can embark on a career as any of these positions, or hop online through Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network to join fellow band mates.

Once again, it is time for all of us to rock. (Screen taken from original Rock Band.)

Electronic Arts confirmed that Rock Band 2 is more party-oriented. While the company didn't provide any details as to what new modes, they will be available for both online and offline sessions. Furthermore, you'll be able to log in with friends or team up with random players for various challenges. These could be anything, from a Battle of the Bands-like mode to a huge set list with randomly placed songs. In addition, enhanced training simulators were also hinted at, for those who need help with singing and drumming.

We've got a strong idea as to what artists and music will be available on the 80-song soundtrack. These range from classic rock to '80s tunes to current alternative favorites, perhaps including such hits as Soundgarden's "Spoonman." Linkin Park's "One Step Closer (Break)," Alice In Chains' "Man In the Box," The Go-Go's "We've Got the Beat" and Bon Jovi's "Livin' On a Prayer." Like the previous Rock Band game, weekly downloads will be accessible upon the game's release, including full albums, current radio hits and occasional freebies, such as "Still Alive" from the Portal game.

Most importantly, Rock Band 2 will offer full backwards compatibility with not only the original Rock Band accessories, but the downloadable content as well. All the songs you downloaded over the past few months, including Disturbed, Jimmy Buffett and this week's selections from Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rush, will instantly pop up as playable tracks in the sequel. The instruments will work as well, although EA will produce improved and wireless peripherals to sell alongside the second game. We certainly hope this includes a guitar with a looser strum bar and a drum set with better padding, like the one that shipped with the Wii version of Rock Band a couple of weeks back.

There are questions that still need to be answered. Will Wii and PlayStation 2 owners still need to purchase separate Track Packs, or will they have finally have access to downloadable content? Is the World Tour mode set to make a return, or does EA have something more expansive in mind? Is the customization tool going to see more equipment and clothing accessories? We'll find out soon enough.

In the meantime, rock fans can rejoice. The promise of full backwards compatibility with both peripherals and downloadable tracks from the first Rock Band brings a welcome sigh of relief. With Harmonix still at the helm, there's no reason why this party can't keep rockin'. Look for more details and impressions of Rock Band 2 next week.
