Resident Evil 5 Producer: No Political or Racial Statement Intended (XB360)

While RE5 is not helped by lines like "there's no reason here... no humanity," the inclusion of a black female protagonist is welcome regardless, considering that the number of such heroines in video games could probably be counted on one hand.

When the first full trailer for Resident Evil 5 released in 2007, it was immediately criticized for its content. The use of an ethnically white American firing upon ethnically black Africans drew fire from people both inside and out of the video gaming realm. Newsweek editor N'Gai Croal thought the trailer walked a precarious line and said, "This imagery has a history."

A new trailer is out for Captivate 08, and in it the various zombified peasants appear to be a bit more ethnically diverse than in the first trailer. Speaking to Kotaku, Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi said that the changes reflected what their team had seen while in Africa and that criticism of racism did not play a part in the changes.

"In terms of the reaction, we're in the business of entertainment," said Takeuchi. "We didn't set out to make a racist game or a political statement. We did feel there was a misunderstanding about the initial trailer."

Probably the biggest revelation of the trailer is that of Chris Redfield's new partner, who both looks and sounds like a native of Africa. Again, Takeuchi emphasized that her inclusion has been planned for a while and was not planned as way to diffuse claims of insensitivity.

"We wanted Chris to have a partner who was familiar with the environment," commented Takeuchi. "She's been in there since pretty much the beginning."
