With Resident Evil 5 quickly approaching, Capcom gave GameDaily another taste of its highly anticipated horror fest. Last time we played it, Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar were in pursuit of a slimy little guy named Irving, who led our heroes on a wild goose chase through a monster-infested oil refinery; Irving escapes by boat and detonates the refinery. Thankfully, Chris, Sheva and an unnamed investigator manage to secure a speedboat and continue the chase.

This short, three to four minute level takes place almost entirely on the boat. Although you're unable to steer (the unnamed investigator handles that), you and your computer/human-controlled partner are free to move around. You'll need to have eyes in the back of your head, as the boat passes underneath bridges and eventually gets stuck between gates. Enemies make excellent use of the high ground and throw lit sticks of dynamite, flaming arrows and even man gun turrets.

First reports indicate that Resident Evil 5 will be set in a new desert location and star Chris Redfield of Resident Evil 1 fame. The game will apparently keep the control scheme and action of Resident Evil 4. (Screenshot 1 of 38)

For the sake of the demo, Capcom gave us infinite ammo and we made sure to use it. Although it's difficult to score headshots on a moving boat, the numerous red explosive barrels made short work of whatever got in our way. A few well-placed shots was all it took to detonate one of those suckers, resulting in a gorgeous fireball that instantly fried the infected villagers within range of the blast.

Although we only spent a few minutes with the game, it appears that the enemies don't care about the boat's driver. While not realistic, we enjoyed not having to baby-sit him. However, if Chris or Sheva die, it's game over so your focus should remain on them

Since Resident Evil 5 is a co-op based game, its developers forced us to complete this level as a team. After being trapped between gates (and coming under fire), we split up and made our way to two locks. Once we reached them, both Chris and Sheva had to activate them at the same time. Then we made a mad scramble back to the boat.

Thanks to the emphasis on co-op, RE5 thus far lacks the intensity of its predecessors. There's just nothing scary about battling flesh-eating creatures when a buddy with a machine gun has our back. That said, the game is still fun to play with a friend, and we can't wait for its March 13 release.
