We reviewed the first Resident Evil 5 add-on, Lost In Nightmares, a couple weeks ago, and while it's a first-rate addition to the series, we grew bored of the routine puzzle solving. Fortunately, Capcom balanced the load with its second DLC pack, Desperate Escape. The monotonous dialogue and crank turning was replaced by non-stop action, from the moment you start running to the satisfying conclusion.
You play as series hero Jill Valentine in a story that ties in with events from Resident Evil 5, after Chris and Sheva rescue her from Wesker's captivity. While they pursue him, you team up with fellow BSAA agent Josh Stone in an effort to escape the Tricell facility. Unfortunately, all hell breaks loose.
Desperate Escape doesn't have an ounce of puzzle solving. Instead, you'll use your gun, knife and whatever weapons you come across (the rocket launcher is definitely helpful) as you fend off angry natives, crazed chainsaw wielders and even the big axe man from the village. These guys come at you in droves, so stay on high alert. This is frenetic and thrilling stuff.
Be aware, though, that Desperate Escape is very hard. Even if you choose the game's lightest difficulty (Amateur), you'll be put to the test. Within the first few seconds of the game, we were already dealing with two chainsaw wielders and their posse within a small space. Thank goodness for all those Tricell explosive barrels.
In addition, we suggest playing Desperate Escape with a friend. Trying to get through the game with an computer-controlled partner is a colossal task, if only because they're lame-brained. One minute, they'll waste your ammunition, and the next, they'll be unable to fight back; just because you successfully dodge the wrath of the chainsaw guys doesn't necessarily mean they will. It's a blast, however, with a friend via Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network.
On top of that, Capcom did an exceptional job with the game's presentation. Both Josh and Jill have great dialogue. The other sound effects are terrific as well, from the moaning enemies to the thunderous explosions. Finally, the music lives up to the Resident Evil tradition, picking up the pace as the screen overflows with enemies.
Resident Evil fans have the best of both worlds. If you prefer something slow and tense, Lost In Nightmares is an ideal choice. However, if it's action you want, download Desperate Escape. While the artificial intelligence and difficulty pack a huge challenge, the sheer excitement and fun (especially with a friend) make it worth the $4.99 price tag. Lock and load.
