In a surprise announcement coming this weekend from one of the industry's biggest game companies, Capcom has announced that a PlayStation 2 version of the upcoming Resident Evil 4 is in development. Previously a GameCube exclusive, the PlayStation 2 build of Resident Evil 4 is currently on schedule for a release at the "end of 2005," according to Capcom. The GameCube version of the game is set to release on January 11, 2005 in the United States and just two weeks later in Japan.

The information comes as part of a post on Capcom's official Japanese website. In the post, it is made evident that a PlayStation 2 version of the title is being developed "after deliberating over customer's needs, market environments, and various opinions from stakeholders such as shareholders or investors."

Resident Evil 4 has continually impressed the gaming community throughout its development cycle with staggering visuals, a new over the should viewpoint, and a uniquely terrifying atmosphere. In the game, players will assume the role of franchise staple Leon S. Kennedy as he embarks on an all-new quest to rescue the President's kidnapped daughter from a European threat.

No information as to if the PlayStation 2 version of the game will contain any extra content, modes, or online functionality has been issued from Capcom as of yet. We'll hope to learn even more about Resident Evil 4 for the PlayStation 2 as the story continues to develop.
