Rockstar Games today announced that the next game in the Red Dead series is in development. Titled Red Dead Redemption, the Rockstar San Diego developed title will tell the story of redeemed outlaw John Marston during the turn of the 20th century. The game will use the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE) used in Grand Theft Auto IV to recreate the rugged Western frontier.

"The team at San Diego have massively exceeded our expectations with the sheer depth of experiences in Red Dead Redemption," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "The seamless combination of breathtaking beauty and intense action, all woven together with strong plotlines in a massive vibrant, rural environment is mind-blowing. We think this game helps to push the limits of what an open-world gaming experience can be."

Red Dead Redemption will release Fall 2009 on PS3 and Xbox 360.
