Rayman: Raving Rabbids Preview (WII)

It's been awhile since we last saw Rayman, but he's looking good in his return to gaming.

A lot of colorful videogame characters have come and gone, but Ubisoft's Rayman has endured for several years. Whether or not his popularity is genuine or not is up for debate (Ubisoft might be hell bent on flooding the world with his games), but we've enjoyed some of his previous adventures, which is why we're very much looking forward to his latest excursion, Rayman: Raving Rabbids. Not much has been revealed about this multi-console release, but early details and videos point to a very imaginative and incredibly detailed game that'll be fun for all ages.

We do know that Rayman's world has been overrun by Rabbids, these maniacal super crazy bunny rabbits that have seemingly mixed Pop Rocks and Soda and gone completely ballistic. To defeat them, our hero will apparently have to don different costumes, all of which give him various abilities that'll enable him to complete various objectives. For example, when Rayman puts on the disco suit and bust out some slick 70s style moves, his opponents will become hypnotized and he'll be able to sneak past them. There's also a clown suit, but other than that we're not sure what the other costumes will be, though Ubisoft has hinted that it's come up with punk, hip hop, and rock outfits. We're down for pretty much anything, especially if it involves dressing Rayman up like that spiky-haired and scary little girl in the official Rabbids trailer.

In addition to playing dress up, Rayman will also be able to tame animals and use them, but at this point we're not exactly sure whether this means that he will ride them or we'll control them directly. And while no official number has been announced, you'll be able to tame sharks, eagles, rhinos, spiders and angelfish. It's pretty obvious though what those will all be used for. Sharks will go underwater and possibly eat/ram into things, eagles will allow you to make it to hard to reach areas, spiders will walk upside down and along walls, rhinos will furiously smash into things, and angelfish...well...we're open to suggestions on that one.

Other than that, we're really not sure what this game's all about. We do know that there will be several different types of rabbids, hence the need for various costumes and animals. But Ubisoft and developer Michel Ancel have been very quiet, particularly with how the game will utilize the Wii's controller. The game will be available for multiple platforms, but it's obviously going to be a different experience for the Wii. You will be able to control the various characters with the remote, but at this point, your guess is as good as ours. Hopefully, the fact that it's also coming out for the PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, and the GameCube won't mean that it lacks the same ingenuity that'll be found in the other Wii launch titles.

One thing that's not up for debate is the graphics, which, at this point, are quite impressive looking. The videos that have been released show hordes of bunnies milling about as well as gigantic spiders, Rayman, and plenty of other creatures, and the attention to detail is quite striking. However, since no one's actually played the game it's unclear what hardware the game's running on. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will obviously look better than the other ones, but the Wii is a tossup

It may not be as innovative as some of the other Wii launch titles, but Raving Rabbids definitely has potential. The funny looking characters and non-linear worlds will hopefully come together and produce a charming and gorgeous game that'll shine this holiday season. But until we learn more, there are too many question marks, and seeing as how the last few Rayman games haven't been good, we're not sure whether Ubisoft has what it takes to develop a cool game that doesn't involve terrorism, Tom Clancy, and automatic weapons. As soon as we know more, so will you.
