Sony's Ratchet & Clank franchise steps into the portable arena with the upcoming video game, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters for the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Series creator Insomniac chose to hand its baby to developer High Impact Games, and based on GameDaily's early play tests, fans have little to worry about. Featuring plenty of humor as well as great visuals, this game will be another gem in the PSP's growing library.
In an attempt to get away from the dangers of heroism, Ratchet & Clank set off on a vacation. Unfortunately, the inseparable twosome find themselves on yet another mission to save the galaxy. Not only must they rescue a kidnapped girl, but also uncover the mystery behind an ancient race of inventors, the Technomites. Unsurprisingly, they soon stumble upon a diabolical plot in which they must band together to thwart evil yet again.
Keeping with the series tradition, Size Matters features behind the back, third person game play. Gamers control both Ratchet and his robotic buddy using the PSP's analog stick while frantically mashing buttons to destroy enemies. Because the PSP system lacks a right analog stick, players control the camera by pressing the left and right shoulder buttons to maneuver it in the desired direction. An undisclosed number of upgradeable weapons, a varied assortment of guns, rocket launchers and other fun toys fill up the game's armory. To deliver the pain up close and personal, Ratchet whips out his trusty wrench and bashes enemies to bits, or burns them with an Acid Bomb and then blasts them to bits with the double-barreled Lacerator.
Players will also outfit both characters with armor. Levels come littered with all sorts of stylish wares, and while gamers search to complete sets of armor, they mix and match various pieces to achieve different results. Unfortunately, Sony PR did not elaborate on the effects of creating the ultimate armor cocktail, but judging by its enthusiasm, this may be one of the game's more enjoyable and expansive features.
For the most part, Size Matters looks and plays like a standard issue Ratchet & Clank video game, with gamers running about causing havoc, uncovering new missions and collecting bolts defeated enemies leave behind. Fortunately, High Impact provided some variety to spice things up, in particular, a shooting stage in which players maneuver a Giant Clank through space, dodging asteroids and unloading an unlimited number of rockets upon dangerous foes. While simplistic, this stage offers plenty of fun as well as impressive firework effects that pop up whenever rockets explode.
