Double-fine announced today that Psychonauts, their upcoming 3D action/adventure title will be coming to PS2. Previously announced for both the PC and Xbox, this quirky title is the latest from the mind of former LucasArts and Cavedog staff member Tim Schafer and will be published by Majesco. The release of all versions of Psychonauts should be simultaneous sometime early in 2005.

The game revolves around a character called Raz. In the game, Raz must confront a deranged scientist, including channeling his mind into the thoughts of others. There, he will confront that person's fears, eventually working up to his arch-nemesis. In going between the real world an people's minds, you will gain power and achieve your goal.

Psychonauts was set to be published by Microsoft as an Xbox-exclusive title until earlier this year, when Microsoft decided to forgo its rights to publish the game. Microsoft has scaled back Microsoft Games Studios (whose main priority is the Xbox) during the past year, in an attempt to make that part of the company profitable. Along with Psychonauts, they also renounced their rights to Oddworld Stranger (another quirky, formerly Xbox-exclusive title that's now coming to the PS2), and outright canceled True Fantasy Live Online and their XSN Sports lineup. Microsoft also cancelled Mythica, which was going to be a MMORPG set to come out on the PC.
