Prototype is a sweet and sour mix of satisfying destruction and teeth-gnashing frustration. Developer Radical Entertainment deserves praise for a bloody battle royal where dismembering enemies, busting up tanks and smashing helicopters is the norm. Wandering through New York City as the disease-laden Alex Mercer is quite the guilty pleasure, as we harness his unique shape-shifting abilities to devour peoples' memories, gut them like fish and square off against a myriad of creatures. To that end, Prototype's fun, especially for hardcore players looking to cause property damage and upgrade every little thing, but the game's not without faults. Thanks to excessive fog and pop up, we struggled locating collectibles. As for the upgrade system, there's so many level up/moves to acquire that we quickly became overwhelmed and abandoned it. In addition, missions eventually grow repetitive, the story failed to hold our interests and cheap computer opponents killed us more times than we care to admit. Prototype's not a horrible game, but one we don't expect to play months from now.
