According to a report in Variety, Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have made an offer to Mike Newell to direct Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which will be based on Ubisoft's popular remake of the classic video game franchise.
Moviegoers probably know Newell best for his work on the blockbuster Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He most recently directed Love in the Time of Cholera.
Newell apparently met this week with the Disney executives to discuss the Prince of Persia project. Variety said that negotiations are expected to start soon.
Prince of Persia creator will have an active role in the project as well, as he penned the movie's script along with Jeffrey Nachmanoff (The Day After Tomorrow).
The Prince of Persia brand has been a big success for Ubisoft thus far, selling more than 10 million copies worldwide. Disney is hoping to leverage the popularity of the franchise. Variety said the studio "hopes that the project will have tentpole potential."
