Power Stone Collection Preview (PSP)

Capcom finally resurrects its Power Stone franchise!

The Dreamcast saw its fair share of brawling games during its short but inspired run on the gaming market. Amongst them were a few from Capcom, including the likes of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes and Capcom Vs. SNK. But lest we forget about Power Stone, a completely new type of game that made for some raucous battles on the system. The original was great, but the second Power Stone got even better with four player support and more imaginative environments to keep you on your toes. To this day, they remain classics that helped push the direction of the gaming scene, and it looks like they're about to start pushing and shoving all over again.

During the Capcom Gamers Day event in Las Vegas, Capcom unveiled Power Stone Collection for the Sony PSP, which will feature the two games in a whole new light for handheld play. But there's a few other features thrown in for good measure that will make fans of the original games smile with glee, while drawing new ones in to deliver some pummeling of their own.

The plot of the games...well, they don't really matter. Over the course of the action, you'll find yourself battling a number of odd opponents and collecting gems to unleash super attacks, all while you continue your quest for the Power Stones, mysterious gems that pack a god-like power all their own. The fights won't be easily, however. Along with contending with some fierce battlers with their own individual back-stories, you'll also have to deal with environments with hazards and weapons scattered throughout. You'll have to think quickly in order to avoid getting your life bar swatted at.

Some early footage showed that the games looked just as much fun as ever, complete with the multi-tiered levels and the dangers that lurked around every corner. There's a slew of classic weapons, turrets, and other items that can come into play, and Capcom will be adding some new ones to the mix to keep things just as unpredictable. You can also access new unlockable weapons and items with each battle you win, blending things even further on multiplayer play.

Ahh, multiplayer, the true fruit of Power Stone's nature. The game's fun in single player, to be sure, but the games, especially Power Stone 2, were built with multiplayer competition in mind. Power Stone Collection will allow up to two players to jump into the first game, and four in the second. However, Capcom's being gracious with this, allowing Game Sharing to take place. Basically, four players can play at once using only one copy of the game. Awesome.

The game will also feature a few PSP-exclusive additions that will add to the longevity. A new mini-game called Bomber Battle has you fighting it out with your opponents with bombs scattered throughout, tacking on an explosive element to your already insane battle proceedings. The game will also include a couple of other modes, including a training mode (where you can hone the power of your fighting skills a little better) and a screenshot mode (where you can save certain spots of the action for your own private viewing pleasure). The camera system will also see a bit of tweaking to take advantage of the PSP's widescreen format, allowing you to either zoom in really close on the action, or get a distance shot so you can get a layout of the entire level.

Sadly, Capcom didn't have this game in any kind of playable form at their event, but they're sure to have it on hand once E3 rolls around the corner. We'll be back with a full hands-on report and other goodies from the game soon, so keep your eyes open. Power Stone Collection looks to be a wonderful return to old-school next-gen gaming as we knew it. Wait, old-school...next-gen...did I just contradict myself? Ahh, well, doesn't happen that often.
