The Pokemon craze continues to roll on, this time with an all-new chapter for the Nintendo Wii. However, Pokemon Battle Revolution doesn't follow the usual route of Wii games. For instance, the game will be the first online Wi-Fi supported title for Nintendo's machine. Also, it won't use typical controllers...users will have to rely on a Nintendo DS, with Pokemon Pearl or Pokemon Diamond.Pokemon Battle Revolution plays very similarly to the Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Collosseum games. Two players enter a combat field and choose between three different Pokemon characters in their arsenal, each with their own array of attack methods. They then enter a Pokemon combat arena and get pitted against each other in strategic combat, with the owners deciding which tactics work best against each Pokemon. Once all three Pokemon get defeated on a team, that owner loses the battle.
Pretty simply, really. Players start up the game using a Nintendo DS, and then have to rely on touch-screen commands to engage in battle. The text of the game was in Japanese, but pretty easy to understand. One big red button initiates the attack screen, where players choose the Pokemon they want to strike and the attack they want to use. The action then plays out on screen, and shows off the damage done to that Pokemon following the strike. The opposing team then reacts with their own attack.
The game display on the TV screen looked pretty good, although s bit simple. The graphics don't necessarily look any more detailed than they did with Colloseum, but the animation is sharp and some of the visual effects were rather fun to watch. The DS display is very easy to read and navigate, a huge plus for those looking for a simple way to access your best fighters and moves.
The online portion of the game, however, wasn't shown off. Only an offline two player versus affair was shown, but it looks pretty cool, especially to those who couldn't get enough of Stadium and Colloseum. The game's not a fully interactive brawler ala Super Smash Bros., but it should keep Pokemon fans smiling all the same.
Pokemon Battle Revolution debuts this June. Look for more coverage in a preview very soon. Pika!
