Pirates of the Caribbean Online Review (PC)

Some work needs to be done before "The Life" is worth living

After three highly successful movies, it's no surprise that Disney wants players to "Live the Life" with Pirates of the Caribbean Online, a free-to-play massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game set in the same world. Players set out to become the most notorious pirates in the sea through swashbuckling, ship battling and occasionally getting ahead at cards. They'll also run into famous characters like Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann.

With an emphasis on family entertainment, players can either use a built-in name generator to give their character an identity or wait until administrators approve their custom name; the same principle applies to naming purchased ships. The game's cartoon graphics will run on a broad variety of computers, including bargain quality notebooks from wholesale stores.

Technologically, PotC Online pulls off an amazing feat with a completely painless and automatic installation that quickly gets people designing their pirates while the rest of the game downloads in background. Players can sign up for free and play with limited access within an ad-supported window. Paid subscribers (4.99 for the first month, then $9.99 per month) don't have to wait on a login queue and can use all items and go to all areas of the world. Being a paid subscriber definitely has some strong perks, especially since getting disconnected from the game can lead to long wait times to come back, sometimes up to ten minutes or more.
