Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Preview (CELL)

It's good that Phoenix Wright is coming to cell phones because this time, we'll actually be able to buy a copy.

When Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney was released last year for the Nintendo DS, I had no idea how great a game it would actually be. Apparently, others are still catching on to the title's terrific gameplay formula, which puts you in the shoes of a dashing young lawyer getting his feet wet in the muddy waters that is the law. That might explain why the game's getting harder and harder to find these days. Fortunately, Capcom has a viable solution, although doing a reprint of the DS game isn't really it. (Hopefully, that's in the cards, too.) They're bringing a mobile version that looks to improve on the one area the first game didn't have.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney for mobile phones will have a similar interface to the DS game, despite the fact that the action is seriously crammed down to one screen. You'll find yourself given a case-by-case presentation where you have to use your powers of attorney to help keep your client innocent. You'll be able to use objections, listen to a witness' statement, and then gain access to a number of pieces of evidence that can help disprove this statement or find a hole that exposes a lie.

The game runs in a text-based format, with characters shown on-screen dong little motions to show the action that's occuring on-screen as you read what they're up to at the bottom. The game actually looks pretty good thus far, although some people might have some difficulty reading smaller text than what they've gotten used to on the DS. You can still access a number of your options with the number keys, and the execution looks to be rather solid.

But there's a big new feature being introduced that will give the game the much needed shot of longevity that would've make the Nintendo DS version something we could play forever- and that's new cases. Each month, Capcom Mobile will have downloads set up where players can download new cases for Phoenix and company to take on. There's no word yet on the frequency of each case, but it should be pretty solid and add to the gameplay value that's already pretty substantial. You'll start out with a few, then gain access to more and make yourself a high-powered attorney. No "If the gloves don't fit, you should acquit" fluff here.

Phoenix Wright should be beginning his new run on the mobile market later this year, if everything goes according to plan from Capcom's camp. The game looks to have serious potential of being a big hit, and should provide a bit of comfort for those who are going nuts trying to find the DS version without paying the kind of money that would actually require getting an attorney. We'll be back with a review upon the game's release. Case closed!
