It's A Mad World (PS2)

Ultra violence, epic sci-fi and a gun-wielding witch make up three "unique" games from Sega and its brand new partner Platinum Games.

It's official – Sega has partnered with Platinum Games (formerly known as Clover Studios, responsible for Viewtiful Joe, God Hand and the underrated Okami) to bring three new "unique and special" games to the U.S.

"Make that four games," says the Platinum crew, at a media event in San Francisco last night, "but we can only show you three."

Each of the game's leads s stepped up to drop hints about their games, which was then followed by a display fireworks display over the San Francisco bay. The lineup includes the following:

Bayonetta – an An action game starring a modern-day witch named Bayonetta. In the trailer, we hear gun fire and watch bullet cases fall to the ground next to an attractive set of legs in high heels. "We realize it's not a whole lot," says the game's creator Hideki Kamiya, "but this is actually all we can show." Kamiya, also known for his work on Devil May Cry IV, says the witch battles against angels and uses her powers and guns (some equipped to her feet no less) to stop them. Look for this 360/PS3 game in 2009.

Infinite Line – A sci-fi role-playing game for Nintendo DS inspired by Arthur C. Clark, the recently deceased sci-fi writer best known for penning the script for 2001: A Space Odyssey. Players deck out a giant space ship choosing from 150 different parts and 200 different crew members, then race across two galaxies, discovering "what it means to be human across these vast echoes [sic]." In the background, the screen showed off a series of hand-drawn spaceships (that's all they could show at the time) while the developer promised that "no one has a managed to fit such a vast and expansive world on the DS."

Famitsu further reports that the game will include two-player wireless battles and active time battle --– the more full your gauge, the more actions will be available. Look for it in 2009.

Mad World – This over-the-top violent game for Wii is completely in Sin City-style black and white save for the excess amounts of bloodletting where you use the environment to kill opponents in a truly twisted game show. In the brief demo, the main player cut a guy in two by slamming a dumpster lid on his body, goring someone else by slamming them into a wall of spikes repeatedly and shoving a street sign pole through someone's face as they screamed and ran off a ledge. It's so ultra violent, you have to laugh. Each act is followed by a very comic-book like Thwaaak! and Craack! onomatopoeia written in balloon letters on screen. We also saw a game of Man Darts, where the main player swats enemies into a giant dart board, with spikes, earning more points the closer they are to the center and a series of chainsaw duals that ended in the other guy getting sliced in half. "We didn't want to create a dark and perverse game, but rather light and comical," says the game's developer. Jack Thompson, how you like Manhunt now?

Nothing was mentioned in a fourth game at the event, but Japanese game magazine, Famitsu, says that Resident Evil's Shinji Mikami will direct the game.
