MySims Review (WII)

MySims is good fun, but hardly Sim-sational.

MySims for the Wii is anything but another routine Sims experience. Instead of sticking to the proven formula, Electronic Arts (EA) took a different, and cuter, approach. The game almost resembles Nintendo's Animal Crossing series with its abundantly happy characters and designs, but manages to throw in a few creative tools for good measure. It provides the user ample opportunity to build not only their dream town, but its inhabitants as well.

In the game, a fictitious city's mayor freaks out when the previous designer moves away for some inexplicable reason. As a result, the town falls apart and several inhabitants that were once happy decide to move on to greener pastures. With your arrival, she finds herself reinvigorated, hopeful that the town will get reawakened and populated with spontaneous Sim characters.

Players will find many tools at their disposal for designing their own Sim and choosing just the right tone of hair, clothing and voice dialect. From there, they design their ideal house and begin working on other projects, attracting a slew of likable locals as a result. As new establishments get completed and other goals finished, more options become available, expanding your creativity and design options. The harder you work, the more the town comes alive, returning to the happy, bouncy place that it used to be.

MySims' presentation has some aspects in common with previous Sims games, like being able to interact with objects and speaking to the locals with nearly incomprehensible Sim-speak. However, the game overdoses on the cuteness factor. Everyone, for some reason or another, is inexplicably happy. Even in the game's intro, characters only manage to show a sad face for a matter of milliseconds before eventually succumbing back into uncontrollable glee. Fans of super-deformed characters will get a kick out of the Sims' redesign, particularly when they gain access to such over-the-top accessories as Jamaican Rasta caps, afros and baggy pants. However, it might be a bit much for some people to take in -- particularly the overly cute Sim-speak conversations.
