Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Review (PS3)

Despite watered down finishing moves, the clash of these two powerhouse franchises is better than expected.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe isn't just an effective mash-up of two popular franchises, it's a huge improvement on a tired fighting engine. The addition of Free Fall Combat (where you pummel someone as you fall towards the next platform) and Close Combat (where the camera zooms in as you pound someone) are terrific, as are the building-smashing Test Your Might segments. You'll have just as much fun fighting with Scorpion and Liu Kang as you will Superman and Green Lantern. The graphics and sound are outstanding as well, even if the dialogue is hokey at times. There could've been more depth to the two story modes (one for each faction), and the combat and finishing moves were minimized to make the game marketable to the Teen-rated crowd. If you can accept those shortcomings, you're in for a hard-hitting fight.
