Midway Games has announced that Mortal Kombat: Deception, the first 3D fighter to feature online gameplay for both the PlayStation2 and the Xbox, has reached a major milestone by shipping more than 1 million copies to retail outlets across North America. These lofty numbers are enough to make the game the fastest selling in the storied franchise, even eclipsing its highly-successful predecessor, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, by more than 35% in its first week of release.

"Mortal Kombat is clearly a franchise that continues to deliver innovative gameplay along with the hardcore, intense fighting action that fans have come to know and love over the past 12 years," said Steve Allison, chief marketing officer, Midway. "We're extremely pleased to see that Deception has been received in such a positive light by both the media and consumers since we first announced the title in March. It's a true testament to the Mortal Kombat team's hard work and dedication that consumer interest is high enough to make Deception the fastest selling game in Midway's history."

The long awaited fighter packs quite the punch as it delivers the most complete online fighting experience to date and progresses the lethal intensity which the franchise has been known for since its 1992 debut in arcades. Mortal Kombat: Deception features unlimited online competition, multiple fatalities per character; multi-tiered interactive backgrounds and extensive new game modes. Plus, for the first time ever, an enhanced free-roaming Konquest mode, an action/strategy board game and a unique puzzle game serve to compliment the improved fighting mode that has established the Mortal Kombat franchise as one of the greatest fighting series of all time.
